Alliance has a strong and deserved reputation as “family friendly” welcoming swimmers of all abilities and ambitions. The swimmers compete in both the Provincial Towns and Aquasprint Leagues. Alliance Swimming Club is the perfect choice for young people who want to swim, compete and most importantly enjoy the sport.
Alliance Swimming Club was founded in 1946 by a group of young men and women living in the Alliance area of North Belfast. An outbreak of polio had closed all the public pools in Belfast and the group got together to swim at Macedon point on the north foreshore of Belfast Lough. Thankfully they returned “indoors” once the pools re-opened and 70 years later the club is still thriving as the main competitive swimming club in North Belfast.
All swimmers are expected to take part in our team competitions. Alliance participates in two sets of galas each year, the Provincial Towns League (PTL) which runs from September to February and the Forest Feast Aquasprint League which runs from January to May. In very general terms, the PTL is for all lane swimmers and the AquaSprint is for the younger age groups. In addition we enter swimmers into “Open Galas” which gives an opportunity to compete in a broader forum.
